Steffan Harries, one of our Associates based in the Cardiff office, is running the 2019 London Marathon on 28th April 2019, on behalf of Tommy’s, the baby and pregnancy charity. Read Steff’s running story to date below, and details of how to make a donation to the cause.
“I have signed up to run the London Marathon and fund-raise for Tommy’s (https://www.tommys.org/) and am now in the home straight in terms of my training. With under eight weeks to go as I write, the long training runs are getting longer, and tougher.
My training races have included the Cardiff Half Marathon last October and two trail half marathons, in November in the South Downs National Park and in February in the Afan Valley above Port Talbot. Last week’s training consisted of a 13-mile coastal path run and an 18-mile trail run/trek over Caerphilly Ridgeway in terrible weather, as I seek to up the mileage.
All this is being done for the adventure of it all, but also in aid of an excellent cause. It’s also the culmination of an unlikely running journey. When I first attempted the Cardiff Half in 2007, I was playing rugby and was reasonably fit, but not fit enough, it would seem, to run 13 miles. An old and persistent knee injury flared up and I ended up hobbling over the line, feeling fairly flat about my efforts. After getting advice from my GP that I was probably ‘not cut out’ for running, I gave up entirely, until just over three years ago.
At that time, with a young family, it was increasingly difficult to play team sport due to the antisocial hours it demanded, so I gave running another go, just to try and maintain some fitness. With a bit of patience and persistence, I built up from running the odd mile or two to being able to complete the Cardiff Half in 2017 in a reasonable time.
I’m now taking on a 26.2-mile challenge that I truly never thought I would be up to, and have the privilege of joining my sister on the day, who’s running for the same cause.
I am relishing the task at hand and now just need a final push on the fundraising effort. If would be extremely grateful to receive any sponsorship, which will also mean a lot to the charity.
